Can-Am: Past, Present & Future

At Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP), innovation and passion are at the heart of our commitment, our products and our brands. Ever since J.-A. Bombardier founded the company in 1942, our name has been synonymous with quality and creativity. His pioneering spirit is a legacy that has kept us growing and exploring new frontiers. Today, in the Americas, Europe and Asia-Pacific, almost 7,500 people are keeping the BRP spirit alive in all of our recreational vehicles and products.

With Can-Am® ATVs and side-by-sides, BRP is carrying on a long tradition of conquests. More than 30 years ago, the world discovered the Can-Am brand through revolutionary motocross bikes. While BRP no longer manufactures motocross bikes, the Can-Am legend and winning spirit live on – with passion and exhilaration.

Can-Am all-terrain and side-by-side vehicles are the embodiment of BRP’s ability to redefine any market it takes on.

In the late 1990s BRP re-entered the off-road world with the Traxter ATV. Our designers and engineers brought BRP innovation to the industry with the unique step-through design of the Traxter. This ATV was immediately recognized as being innovative in the industry, being awarded ATV of the Year by ATV Magazine. Soon came the Outlander line of ATVs and with it, even more innovation through its powerful Rotax® engines and its Torsional Trailing Independent (TTI) rear suspension setup – an industry exclusive to this day. BRP engineers and designers didn’t stop there as the company was the first to offer an ATV designed for two riders with the MAX concept. The sport ATV market has also seen its share of BRP innovation, performance and design. The Can-Am DS 450™ ATV is the most innovative sport ATV in the market with its lightweight, no-weld frame and unique front-end setup. To this day, BRP continues to innovate in the ATV market. In combining maximum power, handling and traction, Can-Am ATVs are the choice of enthusiasts and professionals – who drive them right to the podium.

Today, BRP brings Can-Am DNA to the side-by-side market by introducing the 2011 Can-Am Commander™ line-up. The five model line-up with two engine options delivers on the Can-Am promise of cutting-edge design, meaningful innovation and a focus on convenience, maximum value and more usability for the consumer.

This very unique side-by-side family has been designed to bring a new level of power, handling and user-focused features to the industry. Power comes from two engine options: a powerful Rotax 800 V-Twin EFI engine, and now a Rotax 1000 V-Twin EFI engine. This gives the Commander the most power and best fuel efficiency in the industry. For example, the Commander 1000 is 39 percent more fuel efficient than its class competitor.

The Can-Am Commander line reflects BRP’s commitment to offering the side-by-side customer a machine that does not force the rider to compromise performance for functionality. Innovative features like the Dual-Level cargo box, TTI rear suspension, anti-dive front-end geometry and more, throttle-by-wire through its Intelligent Throttle Control (iTC™) system, a 2-inch diameter Rollover Protection Structures (ROPS-approved), the most fuel capacity in the industry (38 liters or 10 gallons); and the most cockpit storage of any other side-by-side. Combined with the most powerful and fuel-efficient engines in the industry, this means the Can-Am Commander is immediately the vehicle of choice for the side-by-side customer.

The entire Can-Am Commander line consists of the following models: Commander 800, Commander 800 XT, Commander 1000, Commander 1000 XT and Commander 1000 X. With its XT and X packages, BRP, through its Can-Am brand continues the tradition of bringing unprecedented value through its factory-built packages.

With the addition of the Can-Am Commander line of side-by-side vehicles, BRP is poised to address just about any need for the passionate off-road enthusiast and for consumers looking for more from the side-by-side experience.

We have had our 2006 Outlander 800 MAX XT’s Since May of 2006. We have never been more pleased with any product we have owned. I am glad to see that Can-Am will dominate the side by side market with the new Commander models.
