Following his third-place finish for the 2009 AMA ATV Motocross Pro-class championship, John Natalie was already gearing up for the 2010 season – planning to make an even bigger impact on the racing world. Natalie spoke of bringing BRP both overall wins and a championship in 2010. John did both, giving BRP its first AMA ATV Motocross Pro-class overall and he led a Can-Am DS 450 sweep of the podium at this year’s Montreal Supermotocross event! We recently caught up with Team Motoworks / Can-Am DS 450 racer John Natalie and got to know him a little bit better both on the course and off. Read what he had to say about capturing BRP’s first national Pro motocross win and more below.
Q: You recently edged out another racer for a huge win at the 2010 Monster Energy Montreal Supermotocross event. Was this one of the most memorable moments of your career?
A: It was definitely a memorable win. I won my heat race and won the main by over 10 seconds. It felt great for BRP too because we swept the podium with Richard Pelchat and Cody Miller finishing second and third respectively. It was awesome to do it so close to home. To get this achievement in front of all the hard working BRP employees and to be able to say thanks to everyone up there was perfect.
Q: How long have you been racing?
A: Wow, it’s been around 23 years.
Q: When did you realize you wanted to be a professional racer?
A: The first time I raced I knew I wanted to go pro. I don’t do anything less than 100 percent.
Q: What is the most important thing you do to prepare for a race?
A: Two of the most important things I do to prepare for a race are eating right and getting myself mentally focused.
Q: What are two of the truly standout race experiences you’ve had with your Can-Am DS 450?
A: One has to be the DS 450 ATV’s first overall win at Pleasure Valley, Pennsylvania this season. And another was coming from 20 seconds down after crashing in the first turn at Steel City national in Pennsylvania to finish fourth!
Q: What is your favorite course on the GNCC circuit?
A: Red Bud and Pleasure Valley are two of my favorites.
Q: In your opinion, why do you think the Can-Am ATV’s are the best?
A: The ride says it all. They handle great with lots of power, and they have the most supportive people behind them. From the owners and engineers to the actual assembly, everyone at Can-Am puts their pride into what they do.
Q: What do you like to do when you’re not racing?
A: When I’m not racing, I really enjoy riding horses and going boating.
Q: Do you own any other BRP products?
A: Yes, we have four Sea-Doo personal watercraft.
Q: What would fans and other racers be surprised to know about you?
A: People would probably be surprised to know that I’m a big softy when it comes to animals. I have two tea cup Pomeranians that rule me.
Q: What would be the ultimate race to win?
A: Any race on a Can-Am, but I would love to win the Pont de Vaux endurance race.
Q: What is one of your goals for the next few months?
A: In the coming months I hope to train hard to get my strength and endurance up.
Q: Do you see yourself still riding ATV’s ten years from now?
